A sample survey of working Americans shows millennials and Gen Z workers are far more in favor of joining decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and working remotely in a post-Covid-19 world.

More than 1,100 Americans took part in a survey conducted by the MetisDAO Foundation, which examines trends in remote work preferences and the emergence of DAOs in recent years. A key consideration is the impact of Covid-19 on worker sentiment and the rise of the DAO in corporate governance.

Citing a research report on the DAO published by the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance, the results of the survey show how DAOs increased their treasury obligations from $400 million to $16 billion in 2021.

This coincided with an increase in membership from 13,000 to 1.6 million over the same period. Compared to some of the largest multinational corporations, the DAO’s global workforce is equal to one Amazon, 18 Facebook, seven Microsoft, or 11 Google.

The impact of Covid-19 is the main driver behind the Metis report, which examines the readiness of workers for decentralized employment opportunities. The sudden and rapid transition to remote work during the pandemic appears to have led to knowledge and understanding of DAOs and decentralized autonomous companies (DACs), especially among millennials and Gen Z workers.

The main takeaway from the results is that nearly 75% of respondents believe companies will need to adapt their business practices to offer more remote work options. Millennials working in hybrid or remote settings have given the most positive feedback on how DACs offer opportunities for workers to help run the company.

47% of respondents also indicated that they are willing to work for a DAO or DAC as a contract employee. The survey also shows that millennial workers are more likely to work for a DAO or DAC than any other age group.

Meanwhile, Generation Z respondents identified DAO most accurately compared to respondents from other age groups, and the majority of Generation Z participants also identified DAO as “a revolutionary movement that is changing the future of work.”

In closing, MetisDAO highlights the impact of extended remote work environments driving the desire for a more decentralized and autonomous work environment.

“The results of the survey show that the majority of respondents are looking for all the features of the DAC; telecommuting opportunities, independence from management, and impact on the organizations they work for.”

The MetisDAO survey was conducted from a sample of 1,112 respondents via SurveyMonkey in November 2022. DAO is part of Metis, Ethereum’s layer 2 cumulative solution.
